FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
What tests do I need prior to weight loss surgery?
Before weight loss surgery, you will undergo several tests, including blood work, an ECG, a psychological evaluation, and sometimes imaging studies like an abdominal ultrasound or endoscopy. These tests ensure that you’re a good candidate for surgery and help identify any potential health risks.
Will I feel hungry again?
After bariatric surgery, many patients experience a reduced appetite due to changes in gut hormones and the size of the stomach. However, hunger may gradually return over time, though often at a much lower intensity.
What is the importance of the pre-op tests?
Pre-operative tests are crucial for assessing your overall health and identifying any conditions that could increase the risk of complications during or after surgery. These tests ensure you are in the best possible condition for the procedure and help guide the surgical team in planning your care.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
For your appointment, you should bring your GP referral, a list of current medications, and any relevant results or medical records. It’s also helpful to bring a list of any specific questions you may have.
What is the safest weight loss surgery?
The safety of weight loss surgery depends on individual health conditions, but generally, laparoscopic and robotic procedures like gastric sleeve surgery and gastric bypass are considered safe, with relatively low complication rates.
Are there any non-surgical weight loss options?
Yes, a non-surgical weight loss option we offer at our practice is the gastric balloon. This is usually part of a 6 or 12-month program. This approach can be effective, especially when combined with support from a multidisciplinary team.
What is the wait time for an appointment?
The wait time for an appointment varies depending on the location where you want to consult with Dr. Bhatia. We reserve time for new patient consultations, so you can usually get an appointment within 2 weeks.
Can I have my surgery funded through superannuation?
Yes, we can assist you with the administrative process of using superannuation to fund your surgery.
What do I need to bring to the hospital?
When going to the hospital, bring your ID, Medicare card, health insurance information, comfortable clothing, personal hygiene items, any usual medications, and any required medical devices like a CPAP machine if you use one.
When can I drive again after surgery?
Most patients can resume driving 1-2 weeks after surgery, depending on how they feel, their ability to move comfortably, and their reaction time.
How long do I need off work?
The amount of time needed off work depends on the type of surgery, your job, and your recovery progress. Typically, patients take 1-2 weeks off for sedentary jobs and up to 6 weeks for physically demanding work.
Why do I have to follow a fluid diet for 4 weeks after surgery?
A fluid diet after surgery helps your body adjust to the smaller stomach size, reduces the risk of complications like leaks, and promotes healing. It gradually prepares your digestive system to handle solid foods again.
